Whirlwind Week Part 3: Mount Rushmore

After we left Evan's Plunge, we started the drive across the state of South Dakota. Our next stop was Mt. Rushmore. We stayed the night at a winery/brewery close to the Black Hills. For dinner we enjoyed big pizzas and flights of wine or ice cream for dessert - the parents had wine, the kids had ice cream. We then had a good night's sleep to be ready to explore Mt. Rushmore the next day. When we woke up, we got in the Jeep and drove to Mt. Rushmore National Memorial. Once we arrived, we looked up at the giant faces carved in the rock.

After we picked up some information packs from the gift shop (including our Junior Ranger booklets), we started looking around. We went on a hike around the base of the mountain, and saw a scale model of the faces. Then we went in to the visitor center and learned lots of facts about how the presidents were carved into the rock.

We explored the Avenue of Flags and completed the activities in our booklets. We then went to Memorial Team Ice Cream to have a cool-down snack. Once we finished, we hopped in the Jeep and left Mt. Rushmore. Our next stop was the Cosmos Mystery Area in Rapid City, SD. We went on a tour and got to experience all the weird anomalies. I still don't get how Pickles was able to be taller than me!

After we finished our tour, we got back in the Jeep and headed to the bus. We had such a fun day learning a lot about Mt. Rushmore and exploring the Black Hills and Cosmos.

Fun Fact

Theodore Roosevelt doesn't have glasses lenses on Mount Rushmore, he just has the nose piece to look like he has glasses.
